Latter Day Saints Genealogy genealogy clues

The CHURCH of JESUS CHRIST of LATTER-DAY SAINTS really got the genealogy ball rolling many years ago with Family History Libraries, and their massive record repository in the mountains near Salt Lake City. These latter day saints genealogy records can be accessed by anyone, you don't have to be a member. It isn't Latter Day Saints genealogy - it's genealogy for all!
I'll have more to say on this subject later, and on the wealth of information available at the church's web site Family Search.

Why Do It!

Read a crime thriller lately? What was it that got you turning the pages? The excitement of sifting your way through the clues I bet. Am I right? Genealogy is about the most exciting whodunit you're ever likely to read.
Why?
Because it's about you!

The inimitable Holmes and Watson aren't the slueths in this mystery though. You are! And there are more clues than you can poke a stick at because you have a resource that Sherlock Holmes in his wildest dreams could never have imagined. THE INTERNET!

These resources are all available and more:

  • Free census records

  • Free genealogy search

    Family Search

  • Free Family Tree Search
  •   There's oodles of other freebies, as well as commercial sites offering everything from software to coats of arms.

The point is you no longer have to be stuck in some dusty public record office trying to find all this stuff out. Most of it is already there online. All you need is the motivation. Oh, and the knowledge - available here and in the free ebook.

    Anyone Can Do It

Of course that's true. If I can do it anybody can. The basic premise in genealogy is that you are the first generation in your family tree. Understand that and you have already begun the journey.

    Caution - It's Addictive

Once the bug bites you will very quickly get caught up in your very own mystery. And just like in any good detective story the odd red herring will pop up causing you to pull your hair out in frustration. And I've had my share of red herrings!

Clue #2 - Help is only a mouse click away.

    You Are Not Alone

Family history, another term for genealogy and less likely to be mispelt, is never truly a solo effort. You will discover a myriad of Dr.Watsons only too willing to help your Mr Holmes. You may even make some new friends along the way. From message boards to emails, people will assist you. And you've always got me!
